Triptyque – Natalia Górecka

Triptyque – a solo piano with electronics album is based on the theme of reminiscences of the past, the transience of memory and recollections. Three pieces create a whole in which the piano part intertwines with electronics, creating the title triptych. Album consists of pieces written by Gaia Aloisi, Katharine Norman and Paul Clouvel.

Elements III – Paul Clouvel
for piano and fixed sound
“When you rip off the cloth off the umbrella, it the umbrella still an umbrella?” asks Paul Auster in his City of glass. It no longer performs its function, then it changed into something else. Probably something untitled. However the word around has remained the same. Elements III for solo piano and fixed sound by Paul Clouvel – revised version 2024 dedicated to Natalia Górecka – develop the idea that Auster had. Almost 14 min piece is based on, often persistently, repeated motifs, assuming the pianist’s freedom of the performance. The same or similar elements played by the pianist live are included in the playback, creating continuity of sound, interrupted by mechanical cracks and noises. And no matter how the pianist changes them, the whole piece will remain recognisable in its form.

Charmolypi – gr. χαρμολύπη – Gaia Aloisi
for piano and electronics
An emotional state where happiness intertwines with deep melancholy, creating at the same time the feeling of new, unspoken and complex emotion. A piece for solo piano and playback composed in 2023 by Gaia Aloisi can be understood through the prism of the title. Rhythmic piano part creates with smooth electronics the whole new depth based on the contrasts. Short motives lead one by one to the longer ones, just to reach the climax – musically and dynamically as well. Piece was live performed by Natalia Górecka during IMPULS Festival (February 2025).

Fuga Interna (begin) – Katharine Norman
for piano and fixed sound

Learning, making mistakes, making a progress and finally losing the memory. Using her own experience of being taught by her mother, Norman creates a 10–minute composition based on musical material of J.S. Bach’s Fugue in B minor from Book I WTC. Piano and electronics create coherent whole, passing the musical material to each other, until recognising those two is ”no longer black or white”. Long, lasting chords are often interrupted by short or strongly played notes which break the constant and meditative nature of the piece. A process of learning presented in Fuga, even if based on composer’s memories, reminds me of my own way that I went through. Reminds me of the moment when our mentors pass away, leaving us with the memories and experience.
