QDOOI is a project by Belgian producer Spanking Days Are Over. The focus of this album is the translation of momentary snapshots of space and time (both physically and metaphysically) into sound. The somewhat volatile nature of the finished product is a sideshow to the experience and mindset of making it.
All the tracks were produced either by live recording them or by composing them in a single session in the studio. This way of working allows for a free flow of thoughts and ideas, and a very quick decision-making process and results in a somewhat eclectic selection and quite distinctive variation in sound.
Spanking Days Are Over…
Spanking Days Are Over started as part of the mourning process for the loss of my father. He passed away in April of 2020 and a couple months later, I bought my first drum machine. I wanted to be able to write music, not ‘just’ play the drums and so I started to explore the possibilities of producing electronic music. The initial idea was to make hard music for clubs. As the months went by and I had played a few live shows as an electronic artist, I realised the real healing and satisfaction came from creating music, rather than playing music live.
Nowadays, I rarely play live as ‘Spanking Days Are Over’. This project has evolved into an almost studio-only project. The music I make is also not geared to clubs anymore. I like to look at it as contemporary electronic music with elements of experimental music (such as Musique Concrète, for example).
