Rust of Reverence – Andrew Evdokimov – Hashtag Ensemble

Rust of Reverence (2025) is a multimedia work by Andrew Evdokimov, approximately 54 minutes long. It is written for flute, viola, cello, bass clarinet, live electronics, fixed electronics, and video, conceived for quadraphonic diffusion.

The piece deals with cultural fragility and the erosion of memory, and with how traditions survive when they are forced to hide, fragment, or change shape. It draws on Belarusian folk songs and archival instrumental material, used as source material rather than quotation. The electronics heavily transform these sources, so the originals remain only as faint traces within the sound.

Live electronics work with the ensemble in real time, reshaping the texture and the spatial perspective. The video uses transformed documentary imagery connected to traditional rituals and dance practices. Rust of Reverence is structured as 13 sections and approaches tradition as something unstable, partial, and constantly re-formed. The work was premiered in Warsaw in 2025 at Hashtag Lab by Hashtag Ensemble.
