Either/Or…
David Ryan – Dominic Lash – Emil Karlsen
This album explores both free improvisation and some pieces from an ongoing set of ‘open’ improvisational scores entitled Provisional Pieces by David Ryan. The group playing is intimate and chamber-like, developing intense interactive and responsive situations. It reflects diverse influences as well as, for each of the players, an immense respect for the vibrant traditions of both free improvisation and free jazz. It was recorded by Neil Goody at The Premises Studios, London.
David Ryan (davidryanrecentworks.wordpress.com) is also a visual artist who studied clarinet with jazz musician Don Rendell. His musical interests were consolidated by the re-formation of the Scratch Orchestra (after the death of Cornelius Cardew) in 1984 for the Almeida Festival, and by personal connections with John Tilbury, Christian Wolff, Phill Niblock, and Earle Brown for various performances/concerts. Although often experimenting with ‘open’ composition, he is committed to improvisation, and has been a long-standing member of the London Improvisors Orchestra, as well as in various improvising groups.
Ryan has also performed and broadcast for Danish Radio, UNAM Mexico, BBC Radio 3, Resonance FM, Radiophrenia, Radio Slovenjia, Sky Italia Classica TV, and numerous Festivals, including Bourges (2006), Sonic Illuminations, British Film Institute, London (2009); Namusica (2013 and 2014) Naples, Italy, the Venice Biennale (with Nicola Sani), 2015, and the Music Theatre festival 2025, Prague, Czech Republic. He has collaborated with various ensembles including many performances with the ensemble Apartment House and has been involved in premieres of pieces by numerous living composers. Recent compositions include Recitativo/Clouds and Noise (2014-18), Provisional Pieces (2018 – ongoing), Aphorisms (2019/2024) and Inscriptions (20023-25).
Dominic Lash (dominiclash.blogspot.co.uk/) is a double bassist and guitarist who the Free Jazz Collective has called an “exceptional creative musician”. He concentrates on improvised and experimental music, performing regularly with musicians such as Angharad Davies, Mark Sanders, Mark Wastell, and Alex Ward. He also performed with the late Tony Conrad and Steve Reid, has had solo double bass pieces written for him by composers including Jürg Frey and Éliane Radigue, and has worked with bands and ensembles including Apartment House, Modern Nature, and the Bozzini Quartet. He has been based in Cambridge since the start of 2022, where he organizes the Soundhunt improvised music series, with the guitarist N.O. Moore, on the last Sunday of every month at Thrive on Norfolk Street.
Emil Karlsen (emilkarlsen.com) is a Norwegian improvising drummer currently based in the UK. Described as “a real force on the UK improvised music scene”, he’s establishing himself working within the span from free improvisation to free jazz. Occupied with the exploring timbral possibilities of the drum kit, he performs with Philipp Wachsmann, John Butcher, Phil Durrant and Maggie Nicols to mention some. Apart from being an active performer he’s central in the revitalisation of the historic Bead Records.
